Avalon (PP#11906) This almond variety was discovered as a chance seedling in the Atwater area in 1980. Avalon exhibits a long bloom, starting three days ahead of Nonpareil, and overlapping with Carmel. Harvest time is eight days after Nonpareil. It has a semi-soft shell, well sealed for low worm and ant damage. Trees are somewhat upright. Avalon is a variety to consider along with Nonpareil, Wood Colony, Price and Carmel. |
Wood Colony Outstanding heavy production has been the hallmark of Wood Colony since its introduction in 1985. Wood Colony's prolonged bloom coincides with Carmel, and has a similar scaffold structure. Because of its compact size, the tree is suitable for close plantings. Wood Colony works well as a pollinator for Nonpareil. |
Sonora Blooms before Nonpareil. The production potential for this high quality tree is very good. Sonora features large kernels with a very high shelling percentage. Trees are medium to large with a tendency to spread. Sonora is compatible on Marianna 26-24 rootstock.
|
Butte The Almond Board of California and U.C.'s regional variety test plots both confirm that the Butte is one of the state's top producers. This consistently heavy producer has a hard shell with a good seal. Butte is ideal for a later bloom/harvest combination and works well in conjunction with a number of various varieties. Butte/Padre combination - has become very popular during the last several years. This combination offers exceptional production, similar bloom and harvest times, and kernels that closely resemble each other. |
Winters (PP# 13286) Winters (Formerly UC-13-1) is a new variety from the University of California which blooms 2-3 days ahead of Nonpareil with good bloom overlap. Winters has been quite productive in Butte and Kern County regional variety trials. Winters appears to be susceptible to some spring diseases and is not recommended to be planted where disease pressure is high. Winters harvest just before Carmel and appears to have good quality kernels.

Aldrich This newer variety appears to be very productive. The Aldrich blooms with Nonpareil but harvests 14 days later than Nonpareil. This is a large tree with an upright growth habit. The Aldrich nut is similar to the Merced.

Livingston This variety has consistently displayed impressively high production. Livingston blooms about three days after Nonpareil and harvests approximately eight days after Nonpareil. This is a medium-sized tree with a semi-upright growth habit. Easy to knock.
|
Nonpareil Large paper thin shell, flat kernel, most widely planted variety in California. Has high market demand. Nut removal is relatively easy. Tree - large, upright to spreading.
|
Carmel Introduced in 1966. Heavy producer, shell is soft, well sealed. Kernel large and elongated. Tree - small to medium size, not spreading but more upright than Nonpareil.
