Howard We are excited about this relatively recent University of California variety, an excellent producer with consistent 80-90% percent lateral bud fruitfulness. Howard's large, superb kernels have exceptional color at 90% light. This is a small, moderately vigorous tree and is very suitable for hedge row plantings. It harvests at mid-season, slightly ahead of Hartley and leafs late (15 days after Payne) making it less prone to blight. |
Tulare (PP#8268) Formerly UC67-11 (Cross of Serr X Tehama) This relative newcomer introduced by the University of California has excellent potential as an early and heavy producer. The Tulare is a late-bloomer that harvests mid-season. Tulare's pollen-shedding appears to overlap a large percentage of the female bloom. The nuts are large and well-sealed. Kernel crack-out is about 53%, and kernel color is 86% light. This moderately vigorous tree grows upright. Tulare is a potential hedge row variety. Fruitful, lateral buds are approximately 72%. These varieties are sold under license from the Regents of the University of California. Propagation without a written license is prohibited.

Chandler The University of California introduced this variety in 1979 and it has proven to be highly productive with superior nut quality. The nuts are large and the shells are well sealed. The kernel color is excellent at 90% light. The Chandler is a medium-sized, semi-upright, moderately vigorous tree. Lateral and bud fruitfulness is 80-90% percent. The Chandler harvests mid-late season and needs Franquette or Cisco as a pollinator. |

Robert Livermore Walnut (PP# 12264) The Robert Livermore is a walnut variety which was produced from a cross of Howard and Juglans purpurea. It's leafing date is close to Chandler, occurring around mid-April in Davis, California. The harvest date of Robert Livermore is around the first week of October. It has a lateral fruiting habit with a medium to high yield. Robert Livermore is a one-of-a-kind nut with appeal for specialty markets.

Hartley Harvests mid to late. Consistent producer with high quality meats. Leafing date is 16 days after Payne. Less susceptible to codding moth and blight. Nut- large. Shell well sealed. Tree - medium to large, moderately spreading. Scharsch Franquette works well as pollinizer.

Fredrick (PP 14,236) An early blooming variety with spreading growth habit. The nuts are tightly sealed with an excellent crack-out ratio. The harvest time is early just before Serr. Appears to have low blight potential and consistent production. Burchell Nursery is still gathering information on this new variety.
